A stump left in a paddock is more of a nuisance on acreage than in a town yard. You catch it with the mower, it sits in the way of a new fence line, it throws suckers from the root plate, and on a working block it is one more thing to steer the slasher around. Grinding it out flush clears the lot in one visit. Around Mount Evelyn we bring a tracked grinder that can get across a paddock and chew through the bigger rural stumps, gum, pine and cypress included.

What it costs comes down to three things, the diameter of the stump at ground level, the species, and how far below grade you want the wood gone. For mowing or running a fence over the spot, flush to around 150 to 250mm under is plenty. If you are putting a shed footing, a new tree, or a track over it, we chase the roots deeper, often 400mm or more, since acreage stumps tend to have a wide root plate.

Grinding leaves a hole of chip, root fibre and loosened soil that drops as the wood breaks down. For a paddock you usually just tamp it, top it with soil and let the grass take. If a young tree is going back in the same spot, pull the chip out and backfill with screened soil, because rotting wood ties up nitrogen and a new tree planted into it will struggle. We can do the backfill as a line or you can handle it.

01

Fully insured

Ask and the Certificate of Currency is in your hands before a saw starts. Big trees and tracked machinery are exactly the jobs where that paper matters, so check ours the way you would check anyone's.

02

Qualified arborists

Reading a tree is the real skill: is the wood sound, where is the weight sitting, what will the wind do mid-cut. We assess every trunk before deciding how it comes down, and we will tell you straight when a tree is worth keeping instead of cutting.

03

Same-day response

If a tree is moving or a limb is over your only driveway, say so when you ring and you go straight to the top of the list. Everything else still gets a call back before we knock off and a quote visit within a couple of days.

04

Locally based

We spend the working week on blocks between Lilydale, Silvan and Seville, so we already know the overlays, the clay driveways that grease up after rain, and how long a wet track needs before it will carry a loaded truck.

05

Careful standards

No topping, ever. Cuts go back to the branch collar or a sound lateral so the wound can close, we cap how much live canopy comes off in one visit, and habitat hollows stay put where it is safe to leave them.

06

Right equipment

A tracked machine crosses a wet paddock without churning it up, the basket keeps our crew out of brittle dead timber, and the chipper takes whole trunks so nothing is left sitting in a burn pile.

Stump Grinding · FAQ
Q.01 How deep do you grind?

For mowing or a fence line, flush to about 150 to 250mm under is enough. For a footing, a track, or replanting a tree in the same spot we go to 400mm or deeper. Acreage stumps often have a wide root plate, so tell us what is going over the spot and we match the depth to it.

Q.02 Can the grinder get to a stump out in the paddock?

Usually, yes. We run a tracked grinder that crosses paddocks and handles the bigger rural stumps. If the ground is too wet to take the machine without cutting it up we will say so at the quote and pick a drier window rather than wreck your paddock.

Q.03 What is left in the hole when you finish?

A mix of wood chip, root fibre and loosened soil, roughly level with the ground. It drops as the wood rots, so for a fence or a track we tamp it and top with soil. For replanting we pull the chip out and backfill with screened soil so a young tree is not sitting in rotting wood.

Q.04 Is it cheaper to grind several stumps at once?

Yes. The cost of getting the machine to your block only happens once, so doing a row of stumps in the one visit works out cheaper per stump than calling us back for each. Send through how many and their rough diameters and we will quote the lot together.
